F

red Kattermann (an electrical engineer by profession) has made a special study of the cacti of Chile over many years, and has paid particular attention to the Neoporteria group. He has visited virtually all the known habitats and compared the plants in the field and under greenhouse conditions, carefully documenting as many of them as possible with colour photographs, drawings and herbarium specimens, and with SEM photographs of the seeds.

He has looked for reliable distinguishing features at generic and specific level in the plant bodies, roots, spines, flowers, fruits and seeds, and his data have been subjected to modern methods of cladistic analysis. It is his inescapable conclusion that all belong to one genus only and that Eriosyce, the earliest of the group to be named, cannot be left out of consideration.

In a recent ballot, his proposal to amplify Eriosyce to include Neoporteria etc won the support of the Cactaceae Section of the International Organization for Succulent Plant Study (IOS).

Fred Kattermann‘s studies also suggest that the group as a whole comes down to 38 ‘good’ species. Each of these is fully described and illustrated in this work, and differentiated by means of an identification key. They include an interesting new species, formally described in an Appendix to the work by Jonas Lüthy (University of Bern). Further Appendices detail the results of the cladistic analysis by Dr Robert S. Wallace (Iowa State University) and the documentation of all plant names used, along with more than 500 synonyms.

The work is a notable example of what can be done by a dedicated hobbyist with the support of professional botanists. It is comprehensively illustrated with colour photographs, SEM plates, line-drawings and maps.
