U ebelmannias have, since their discovery in the 1960s, held an almost mystical aura. When first introduced into cultivation they caused a sensation, creating much speculation about their origins and affinities with other cacti. Uebelmannias were, and still are, relatively rare in cultivation and somewhat of a challenge to grow, largely because so little is known about their habitat. Rudolf Schulz and Marlon Machado have teamed up to collect, compile and analyze the current knowledge about the genus Uebelmannia in their natural habitat in the mountains of eastern Brazil. The authors visited and have photographically documented the most important locations for all of the described species and varieties of the genus. In keeping with the style of ‘Copiapoa in their Environment‘ which was co-authored by the senior author, this book covers more than just the genus Uebelmannia. The environment, associated plants and animals and the cultural history of the area are all discussed in individual chapters. The information presented about the distinct and unique environment of the species should supply the reader and collector with enough information to understand better how to grow and maintain their plants. The text throughout is readable and jargon-free, in keeping with the author’s desire to make this book an enjoyable reading experience. |
