elize (formerly British Honduras) is one of the smaller countries of Central America, with a relatively low human population density and previously inaccessible rain forests. This, combined with its highest point being only just over a thousand meters with a consequent reduced range of altitudinal flora changes, has resulted in few scientific botanical surveys that have concentrated on the orchid flora. Native Orchids of Belize, by McLeish, Pearce and Adams, has been produced as a culmination of several years of
collections made by the authors while working in the country.

They recorded over seventy species previously unknown in Belize, as well as discovering two species unknown to science. This book is the first time that all of the orchid species ever recorded in Belize have been botanically described under one cover. All species are keyed-out, thus making it relatively easy for orchid enthusiasts to cross-reference their material and descriptions.

Over two hundred colour photographs and a hundred line-drawings add to the importance of this work to complement others previously published on orchids of Central America. Scientists will find this book very beneficial to help them with base-line data in a country which is at the forefront of conservation attempts.
