L ife began in the sea. Today. warm tropical waters still provide the quintessential environment for life on earth. Here tiny coral polyps have proliferated, forming limestone structures that provide habitat for a biological diversity of exotic and colorful species that can only be rivaled by the world’s great rain forests. When a diver swims over a coral garden, the abundance of life creates a spectacle difficult to imagine. First to attract the eye are the many dazzling fishes that move by with endless energy; but, when the sunlit crest is left behind and the reef s craggy surface is explored, a new realm is discovered this is the domain of the marine invertebrate, where many of our earth’s most beautiful and bizarre creatures make their home. Reef Creature Identification is a comprehensive, pictorial guide for the visual identification of marine invertebrates that live in, on, and around the reefs of Florida, the Caribbean and Bahamas. It is a companion text to Reef Fish Identification, first published in 1989, and the second of a three volume set that will include Reef Coral Identification. In the past, the underwater naturalist’s enthusiasm was t0o often tempered by the inability to identify or locate information about the many strange creatures encountered on the reef. This frustrating situation stemmed from the fact that scientific identifications, the majority completed well before the advent of SCUBA, relied on laboratory examinations of preserved specimens. These studies were unable to take into account visual clues such as colors, patterns, and behavioral traits exhibited by the creatures in the wild. Underwater identification has, unfortunately, been limited to those species known by characteristics of their external anatomy; for those requiring dissection and/or microscopic examinations, there was no established method for recognizing the species in their natural habitat. As divers are becoming more conscious of the reefs’ natural history, marine biologists are also spending more research time underwater; both groups understand the importance of bridging the gap between laboratory taxonomy and visual identification. Reef Creature Identification represents a cooperative and productive collaboration between the scientific community and author/photographer Paul Humann. Over thirty biologists, specialists in their fields, contributed information, advice and lab time to this project. This process, requiring complicated photographic/collection dives, careful packaging and shipping of specimens, lab examinations and documentation has, for the first time, made it possible to identify many invertebrates by visual characteristics alone. Underwater identification plays a significant role in the protection oI our coral reef systems by functioning as a catalyst for environmental awareness. When we learm to recognize a new species, we immediately begin to become familar with the creature’s patterns of behavior: and, when we begin to understand the nature of an animal, a concern for its welfare always follows. It is our hope that Reef Creature laentification and its companion volumes will add a new dimension to your underwater exploration, and with each personal discovery deepen your resolve to help save our seas.
