o adventure on earth inspires our innate thrill of discovery more than a swim in an underwater wilderness. Here, hidden just below the ocean’s surface, lies a beautiful, exotic, and enchanting realm rife with mystery. Today’s divers are the pioneers who will witness and chronicle this last great undocumented natural history.

Paul Humann‘s Reef Fish Identification, 1989, and its companion text Reef Creature Identification. 1992, and Reef Coral Identification, 1993, have revolutionized marine life identification.

The comprehensive, three-volume Reef Set, with its user-friendly, quick-reference format and unparaleled collection of photographs, provides recreational divers with the tools necessary to become underwater naturalists.

The enlarged and updated 2nd edition of Reef Fish Identification, with 124 new fish species (several photographed for the first time), and 325 additional color plates, was published in response to the ever-growing number of divers and marine scientists who require an even more sophisticated visual identification reference.

Most significant is the incorporation of fish species found in marine habitats neighboring the reef -sand flats, rubble fields, grass beds, open-water, coral caves, and surf zones as well as many temperate-water species from central and northeast Florida and the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

These additions, coupled with the use of multiple plates showing marked visual differences within the same species are intended to greatly expand the scope and accuracy of visual identification of marine fish in Florida, the Caribbean and Bahamas.
