he most recent review of the amphibian fauna of Sri Lanka was published almost 50 years ago. Much has changed in the mean time: more species have been discovered or recognised (almost 20 in all), names have changed through taxonomic revision, and the conservation status of several species has altered dramatically due to habitat loss. The amphibians have also suffered from being possibly the least well understood of Sri Lanka’s vertebrates, largely as a result of the limited literature devoted to them.

The present work is the most comprehensive treatment this fascinating fauna has received to date. It is the result of many years of work: while Sushil K. Dutta examined virtually all the important specimens lodged in various museums internationally, Kelum Manamendra-Arachchi made extensive surveys of amphibians throughout Sri Lanka, aided by funds from the World Wide Fund for Nature (wWF) and the Wildlife Heritage Trust (WHT).

In The amphibian fauna of Sri Lanka the authors present easy to use keys to the species, comprehensive anatomical descriptions, clear diagnoses, distribution maps and for almost every species, a colour photograph. The nomenclature is brought up to date with many changes to the names hitherto in use.
