This comprehensive examination of jazz ephemera contains a history of jazz from its roots in the American South to the international scene of the present day. Tracing developments in performance and style, it includes chapthers on New Orleans, the Big Bands, Swing, Bebop and ‘free-form’, and follows the spread of jazz across the Atlantic to Northern Europe.

Side by side with descriptions of the players, the venues in which they performed, their music and the recording companies which popularized it, there is a detailed examination of the journalism which helped to foster an appreciation of the new sounds.
