s the twentieth century draws to a close and the world moves towards the next millennium, tribal societies everywhere are threatened by the rapid expansion of modern civilization. Some will vanish quietly. Others will protest and gain borrowed time. None will remain untouched. Our contact with these tribal cultures will change them forever. But can it also change us? At a time when our civilization has covered most of the earth — at dire cost to the global environment – Millennium shows us the wisdom to be gained from those societies that we have swept aside.

Tying in with a major ten-part television series, this visually stunning book takes us on an enormously entertaining and enlightening journey of discovery, into worlds that would otherwise be hidden, to discover new ways of understanding ourselves and our modern worlds.

We meet the Gabra, who live in an area of northern Kenya that looks like the surface of Mars and who measure their wealth in camels; we make the acquaintance of the Nyinba of Nepal, a group in which a woman ordinarily marries an entire family of brothers; we observe the west African Wodaabe, who consider themselves the most beautiful creatures on earth and whose men adorn themselves at yearly dances to entice away other men’s wives; we learn about the Kula Ring of the Trobriand Islands, whose participants travel hundreds at miles in canoes over open ocean to exchange bracelete and necklaces identical to those they already own: and the Weyewans of Indonesia, who drag fifteen-ton tomb stones chiselled out of rock to mark the graves at their ancestore.

Millennium explores approaches to partnerehip and marriage, wealth, law and order, cultural integration, spirituality and wisdom in a way that will inform, inspire and change the way we think. Only by understanding the ‘other’ can we get a proper sense of our own place in the world.

Harvard anthropologist Maybury-Lewis argues that the ancient wisdom, communal sharing and closeness to nature found in tribal societies hold survival lessons for our modern industrial society steeped in wastes and rootlessness. The companion volume to a PBS television series hosted by the author, this beautiful, intriguing album surveys 11 traditional societies, from the Gabra who thrive in Kenya’s northern desert to the Makuna Indians of Colombia whose belief in the sacredness of fish-spawning places helps prevent plundering. Spliced with stunning photographs, engravings and maps in jazzy layouts, the text examines how indigenous peoples negotiate gender identity, family ties, sex, governance, old age, death and all-pervasive religious beliefs while fending off technological onslaught. An enlightening multicultural primer.
